Harvey

Visiting Mahahual takes a little bit of determination and some scheduling, but it's a detour worth making. Despite the recently built cruise port that vomits hordes of tourists at regular intervals (and swallows them back down), for now the village remains mellow, with plenty of Mexican tourists and Italian restaurant owners. When there isn't a hurricane on the way.  In August 2007 hurricane Dean almost completely destroyed Mahahual with its 200km/h winds. We were much luckier. On the morning of our second day, on August 8, the camping staff told us about the hurricane alert and in the afternoon moved all the guests to a hotel nearby. When Harvey reached land, around 10pm, it didn't turn into a hurricane but remained a tropical storm. Still, I was glad I wasn't sleeping in a hut on the beach.
